The journeyman rover managed just eight games in six seasons across three clubs. He started his career at South Melbourne and played three games in 1934 - his most productive season - before three in two years with Melbourne.
In Backway's second game with Melbourne, his season was ended by a knee injury. He returned to training in 1936 but the injury was still hampering him and the club sent him away for surgery in August. He returned for one last game at the end of 1937.
After being dropped from the Demons' list in the 1938 pre-season, Backway joined Fitzroy and played one game that year. He was cleared to Essendon in June that year, but didn't play another VFL game. In 1940 he joined Coburg.
Backway enlisted in the Army in February 1943, serving in supply companies during World War II.
His brother Jack played with Melbourne's Seconds in 1936.
