The talented but inconsistent Grgic suffered under comparisons early in his career to Garry Lyon, and of the pressure of being a high draft pick. After playing the last nine games of the 1997 wooden spoon season, Grgic won the Most Improved Player award the next season, and played one of his best games in the thrilling round 8, 1998 win over Collingwood.

After appearing in 19 of 25 matches in the surprise 1998 finals campaign, he suffered a disappointing 1999 season. Groin injuries which Grgic had battled since he was 15-years-old flared. He barely made the Round 1 side, then injured a hamstring and missed several weeks. He eventually managed 13 games but the injuries were a blow just as he looked set for a breakout season.

He bounced back to become a regular in 2000 after being moved permanently into defence. Despite a drop in form towards the end of the year that briefly saw him dropped to the seconds he fought his way back into the side and retained his place through the Grand Final side.

In 2002 Grgic returned to Geelong, and played the best game of his 13 match career with the Cats against his old side. That year he played in a VFL premiership. Delisted at the end of 2003 he joined Bell Park and played there through 2007 before returning to his original club Bell Post Hill as an assistant coach in 2008. They were runners-up in his first two seasons, but after Grgic took over as senior coach in 2010 they won the premiership at the first opportunity. Since then they have won further premierships in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 as well as finishing runner-up in 2013.
