Born in England, Royle debuted as a defender aged 19-year-old in 1898 and played three matches. He played in three consecutive wins at the start of the season before dropping out of the side. Royle applied for a clearance to Collingwood in June but did not play a game for them.
In 1915 he enlisted in the 7th Battalion of the AIF. After serving at Gallipoli, Egypt and in France he was killed by an enemy shell.
