Melbourne faced a North Melbourne side on an unprecedented 25 game winning streak, to decide who would play either Brisbane Lions or Carlton in the Grand Final. The Demons had kicked the opening two goals in each of their finals to date, and went one better with three this time. They kicked four of the seven first quarter goals, and still narrow leads at half time, and after a goalless third quarter. The star-studded Kangaroos side had too much for them in the last quarter, kicking the only two goals while Melbourne failed to score, going down to a narrow loss.
Best were Gillard, Chaplin, and Hore.
