After a surprise loss to the previously winless Essendon in their previous match, Melbourne returned to the MCG for a surprise win over the two-time defending premiers. After an even first half, two late goals gave the Lions a 16 point advantage at half time, before the Demons booted the first five goals of the third term, and seven overall, to take a one goal lead into the last quarter.
Brisbane took the lead early in the last, before the home side kicked three goals in a row. The sides traded goals before Harvey Langford put Melbourne 15 points ahead late. Then Brisbane kicked two late goals to bring the margin under one straight kick, and missed another set shot before Melbourne held on to win.
Best were Kade Chandler, Harvey Langford, and Kysaiah Pickett . Harrison Petty left the field with illness in the third quarter.
The match was dedicated as 'Jim's Day', in memory of Jim Stynes
