For the second week in a row Melbourne had a disastrous start, after conceding seven goals in the first quarter against Fremantle, they let in the first seven against the Blues, six in the first term and one after quarter time. They failed to kick a goal until the last 90 seconds of the first half, but began to run down the deficit after half time.
By three quarter time the margin was back to 12, and soon cut to six early in the last quarter. Carlton steadied with two goals, before Melbourne piled on seven goals to win comfortably.
It was their fourth best comeback from a quarter time deficit in the club's history, and the largest margin overcome at the first break since Round 14, 2002.
Best were Kysaiah Pickett, Max Gawn, and Jake Lever . Latrelle Pickett was fined $1000 for careless umpire contact.
