A long, disappointing season came to an end with Melbourne not only avoiding the wooden spoon after a three win season, but finishing 10th with a better percentage than Hawthorn and one more win than Essendon. In a rare year where Collingwood wasn't playing finals, there was nothing on the line but it turned into a remarkable game with three forwards engaging in a shortout. George Margitich kicked 10 goals for Melbourne, Gordon Coventry did the same at the other end, and Bob Johnson kicked 3.8 from 11 scoring shots. It was only the second time in league history to that point where two players both kicked double figures.

Collingwood took a seven goal lead into the final quarter, but slowed down and allowed Melbourne to cut the gap to 15 points. Margitich kicked six of his goals in the final term, but it came too late. Coventry's 10th came seconds before the siren. Earlier in the game he'd kicked his 100th goal for the season.

Best were Margitich, Murray and Niven. Fischer was replaced by Avery at half time due to a leg injury.
