After earlier wins over top teams Gold Coast and Brisbane, the Demons claimed their most impressive scalp yet under new coach Steven King. In front of largest home and away crowd ever between the sides, surprise forward option Harrison Petty kicked two early goals - including Melbourne's first opening goal of a game in 2026, before Hawthorn recovered to level the game at quarter time.

Three goals in 10 minutes at the start of the third quarter extended the lead to 24 points, and when the Hawks responded with two goals, Melbourne got two of their own. A late Harvey Langford goal set up a 20 point lead at the last change, before Melbourne went on to win comfortably. The lead reached 51 points in the last quarter, before Hawthorn kicked the last two goals.

Melbourne played under the indigenous name Narrm.

Best were Tom Sparrow, Max Gawn, and Jack Steele. Tom Sparrow was fined $1000 for careless umpire contact.
