The Demons bounced back from their first loss of the season despite Norm Smith kicking 0.7. They might have kicked themselves out of the contest, but the tight hold the Melbourne defence had on the home side allowed them to be wasteful without cost.
Fitzroy went in as favourites, but conceded first goal in the opening seconds through Beames. Melbourne kicked the first 2.5 without reply but only four goals from 11 scoring shots before quarter time, including seven behinds in a row. They were lucky to only be 22 points behind at quarter time, then kicked three quick goals at the start of the second term to cut the margin to three points. As the hosts pressed, Mueller saved Melbourne on multiple occasions with his marking in defence. A late Fitzroy goal levelled scores at half time.
Melbourne kicked the only four behinds of the opening 15 minutes of the third quarter, before piling on five goals to no score, opening an 18 point lead. They added another four goals to one in the final term to win easily.
Best were Mueller, La Fontaine and Ogden. 19th man was Coolahan.
