On a ground wet from morning rain, the visitors entered the game without several of their best players. They kicked with a slight breeze in the first half but had the ball camped in front of the goal they were defending for 15 minutes. The visitors eventually extracted the ball, but were weak in the forward line and unable to take advantage. Michael Carter, playing as a substitute for Melbourne, had his side's best chance of the first half but missed.
After the sides changed ends, both sides had problems with spectators encroaching on the field. Both sides had chances to open the scoring, with Norcott going closest for Melbourne.
Best were Barker, Byrne and Moore.
