After playing much of his career as a defender, Fitzgerald moved to the midfield in the 2026 VFL season, and averaged 34 disposals per game before being selected by Melbourne with their second pick in the Mid-Season Draft. Just three weeks later, he made his senior AFL debut, and retained his spot through the rest of the season.
In August, Fitzgerald signed a one year contract extension to remain at the club in 2027.
