Born in New Zealand, ruckman Walsh was recruited after playing for Brighton in the VFA in 1940 and 1941.

Walsh enlisted in the Army in 1940, serving during World War II. Melbourne was obliged to clear him back to Brighton at the end of the war, as the result of an agreement between the VFL and VFA, but he didn't play football again after 1944.

Also played cricket for Richmond.
