Melbourne's improbable run towards the 1993 finals continued with another surprise victory despite Gary Ablett kicking 11 straight. The Cat didn't have the support he needed to carry the Cats over the line in a tight game, and Melbourne did enough to win a shootout.
Neil Balme tried Steven Febey and Peter Rohde on Ablett before conceding that the champion forward was going to kick goals no matter who he played on and concentrated on the others.
Down the other end Melbourne spread their goals, with three players kicking three or more. Darren Kowal booted two goals in a row in the second quarter and Kevin Dyson two in a row during the last, including one from 55m out on the boundary line.
Best were G. Lovett, Lyon and Tingay.
