Drafted by North Melbourne with pick six in the 1992 draft after winning the Eagles' B&F in the SANFL and playing for South Australia, Pyman played finals in his first year but managed just 16 games in total over three years due to stress fractures in his feet and tough competition in North's midfield. Before he was drafted he wrote to North, Richmond, Sydney, Fitzroy and Brisbane saying he would refuse to play for them if picked. North called his bluff but were later fined $10,000 for breaching draft rules to sign him.

Pyman crossed to Collingwood and again struggled, only playing five games in 1996 before landing at Melbourne the next season. He had a good first half of 1997 before going missing in the latter part of the season. He finished 6th in the Best and Fairest but was delisted and joined Woodville-West Torrens in 1998. He was their leading goalkicker that season before returning to Melbourne to work as Communications Manager for Collingwood.

Pyman later had a stint as assistant to Dean Laidley at North before coaching South Adelaide from 2004 to 2007 when he was sacked during the season. After a short stint by ex-Port Adelaide coach Jack Cahill, Pyman was replaced by former Demon Clay Sampson.
