The former basketballer had played football for just three years, and wasn't invited to the 2000 draft camp. Melbourne was granted permission to test him privately, and after proving his athleticism Craig was the second last player picked overall in the 2000 National Draft.

Seen as a future key position forward due to his speed and endurance, Craig played three games for the Sandringham seniors before being delisted. He then transferred to Box Hill, where he remained through 2008.
