The midfielder took a long route to the AFL, starting his career at South Blackburn, playing Reserves for both Fitzroy and Carlton, being joining Mornington, then VFA side Oakleigh. His 1990 performances, including best on ground in a state representative match against the ACT League, won him a spot in Essendon's team for a practice match against Melbourne. Dyson's performance impressed Melbourne, and after the Bombers failed to pick him with their opening selection of the 1991 pre-season draft, Melbourne took him instead. Dyson had also trained with the Bombers in the 1990 pre-season.

After a strong rookie season, playing 22 games in a finals year, Dyson struggle to 12 matches over the next two years, though he did play in the 1993 Reserves premiership.

Back in favour in 1994 and 1995, Dyson opted to join Sydney in early 1996. The Swans had been offered two uncontracted players as part of league concessions for poor performance and offered Dyson a three year deal. He played in their losing Grand Final that season, appearing in 35 games with the Swans to the end of 1997 before retiring.
