Debuted with Footscray in 1939 and spent two years at the Bulldogs before joining Melbourne. Retired before the 1945 season on doctor's advice not to play competitive football, before returning with Williamstown in 1946.
In Round 14, 1955 his habit of pushing the role of a trainer towards what later became the modern day runner caused controversy, with the umpire ordering him off the ground for passing messages under the guise of treating injured players. Soon after the league allowed teams to have runners.
In Round 12, 1959 he was reported for misconduct in that he used abusive language. The charge was upheld and he received a reprimand.
