Played in the 1939 Seconds premiership team and remained in the seconds as a wingman until 1945, missing much of that time due to war service.

His father Vic had already played for the Maroons but he was lured to the Demons with the promise of a job with the Vacuum Oil company. A workplace injury kept him out of the game for twelve months and when he returned to health Chanter enlisted in the army.

After finishing in the army he was meant to return to the Demons, but discovered on the last day before zoning came into effect that he was zoned to Collingwood. Not wanting to play for them his father took him to Fitzroy, who were having a practice match that night, where he signed.

He won the Roys Best and Fairest in 1951 and in 1953 left to become captain/coach of Maryborough where he spent three years.
