Had a fast start to his senior career after crossing from Tasmania, but his form fell away and he only played seven games in 1963. Dropped from the Demons list just before the 1964 season, Thiessen signed with Carlton. He played one year at the Blues before joining North Melbourne early in 1965. That year he also played with VFA side Waverley, appearing with them until 1971
His son James was a member of the 1998 Adelaide premiership side.
