Drafted as a 17-year-old, the 2000 season was a development year for O'Brien as he spent the year in the Sandringham reserves side where he played in the premiership side that season.

Despite putting on muscle, and having enough speed to be considered for a half-back or wing role O'Brien was delisted at the end of 2001 after ten games for the Sandy seniors. He joined Springvale in 2002, and played there until 2004.
