The son of Lloyd Burgmann was recruited under the father/son rule. In 1990 he played in Victoria's winning Teal Cup side before returning to the Dees where he was best on ground in the losing 1990 Under 19s Grand Final, playing Reserves the next season.

Made his senior debut two seasons later but only played one game.

In 1993 he was named in the NSW/ACT State of Origin squad but didn't play. Delisted at the end of that season, Burgmann played a pre-season with Hawthorn in 1994 and while he wasn't drafted by the Hawks he did play in their Reserves. At Springvale in 1995 and captained Frankston from 1999 to 2002.

As late as 2006 Burgmann was captain-coach of Noble Park in the EFL.
