Without a win in six games the Demons faced reigning premier Hawthorn desperately needing a win to get their season back on track but failed miserably.
They were competitive for two quarters of a scrambling, uninspiring game and led by seven points early in the second quarter before Hawthorn grabbed the lead back. The Hawks then kicked 12 goals to three in the second half to crush the Demons.
All three of Melbourne's second half goals were kicked by defender Graeme Yeats who had gone forward after earlier being dragged for poor play in the back line.
Best were Lovell, Stynes and Healy. Pickering suffered a bruised foot and Goodwin a bruised hand.
