Brett Lovett was dropped after 117 consecutive games, but even dramatic changes to the team couldn't help the fortunes of the ailing Demons. They also lost Garry Lyon (wrist) and Greg Healy (hamstring) to injury before the game.
With John Northey having to angrily fend off questions about his history St Kilda were too good, but he won support from President Ian Ridley who threatened to resign if Northey was sacked.
Even Paul Bryce holding the usually deadly Tony Lockett to 3.5 didn't help Melbourne get within ten goals. The Saints kicked seven goals to one to effectively end the contest at quarter time and the match didn't get much better for the Demons. They won the second quarter narrowly but were still beaten comfortably.
Best were Schwarz, Bryce and J. Stynes.
