Having thrashed North Melbourne two days earlier, the Fuschias backed up for their second game of the long weekend and had another victory - their eighth in a row. It was the last time two rounds were played over one long weekend.
In front of the largest home and away crowd in the history of the league to that point Melbourne were kicking themselves out of the game early and by three quarter time they had conceded a lead to the dark blues.
Melbourne finally kicked away - accurately - in the last few minutes to continue their record breaking start to the year.
Best were Warne-Smith, Johnson and Vine. Stan Wittman was reported for elbowing but found not guilty.
