Another win for the red-hot Demons who notched their sixth straight to take first place on the league ladder. They led at each change, but it was a far more difficult task than their thumping win over South Melbourne a week earlier. The quality of the match was severely affected by the terrible quality of Fitzroy's ground, but despite the slippery surface the sides still put on an entertaining clash. Melbourne took a long time to get going, with numerous mistakes. There was also an over-emphasis on physicality, with one defender spoken to by an umpire twice.

Three goals from Baggott in the first term gave the visitors a seven point gap, but Fitzroy kicked the first goal of the second quarter to grab the lead. As tempers frayed the Maroons kicked two more goals to open a handy gap. Then Melbourne struck back, levelling the goal tally from the quarter at four each.

The Reds tore away at the start of the third and kicked two quick goals. Fitzroy had opportunities but struggled to convert until late in the quarter, closing the gap to four points at the last change.

Melbourne took advantage of an error to kick the first goal of the final term, but the margin had come back to three poitns with 10 minutes to play. That was the cue for the visitors to steady, piling on four goals to win easily.

Best were Mueller, Beames and La Fontaine. Truscott was 19th man.

Fitzroy 9.13 d. Melbourne 8.15
