First Goal
Harry Boully (7th game)

Despite greasy conditions and a heavy ball the sides put on a fine game of football, there was little to separate the teams after an exciting first half. Melbourne led by one point, but South took over in the third and were 16 points in front at the last break.

When there hadn't been another score 11 minutes into the last quarter it looked likely that South would hold on to win, before Melbourne goalled to cut the margin to 10. There was another eight minute gap before a score when South kicked a point, but Boully's goal from a free kick cut the margin to less than a goal with four minutes remaining. They attacked again immediately, but South temporarily held firm. Just before the bell Ryan had a flying shot which bounced through to put Melbourne in front, and time expired before the game could be started again.

Best were McClelland, Parkin and Purse.
