Melbourne moved into the top five but their performance against the lowly Swans was less than convincing for a supposed September contender.
The Demons deservedly led for most of the game but a determined push from the Swans in the third quarter threatened to steal the match. A string of umpiring decisions went against the visitors and their heads dropped allowing the Swans back into the match where they hit the front briefly in third term time-on.
Peter Keays was introduced from the bench in the last term and curbed the influence of Swans forward Terry O'Neill who had thrashed Gary Hardeman in the first three terms.
South coach Ian Stewart had been fined $200 for questioning umpiring decisions the week before, and not willing to suffer the same fate Bob Skilton tempered his disappointment in the third question decisions saying only that they got three goals from 'doubtful' decisions.
Best were Flower, Baker and Brewer. Carroll was replaced by Keays in the last quarter. Johnston was an unused reserve.
