After a much improved effort in wet conditions the Demons went into three quarter time just three points behind, then shut themselves out of the match by registering their first scoreless last quarter since Round 11, 1992.

While Jones was Melbourne's best, Jordie McKenzie effectively took Brendan Goddard out of the match and third best Mark Jamar broke the Melbourne record for most hit-outs in a match with 55.

Colin Sylvia replaced Lynden Dunn during the third quarter.
