Having been poleaxed by the Hawks to the tune of a hundred points in their Ansett Cup clash a few weeks earlier the Demons were nearly ten goals better off in the regular season clash but were still well beaten. In terrible conditions the Hawks played better wet-weather footy and deserved the four points.

The match was played against the backdrop of a week of turmoil, with David Schwarz forced to apologise for a racial slur against Geelong's Justin Murphy and then Joseph Gutnick going to war with the league after being threatened with a fine for commenting on the case.

Hawthorn jumped to a three goal lead at quarter time with the aid of the breeze, but by half-time the Demons had dragged the margin back to four. The Hawks were back out to a three goal buffer at the last change, but a clever Shane Woewodin goal early in the last term put Melbourne within two straight kicks.

From then on, though, they failed to fire a shot. The Hawks kicked a controversial goal after an Andrew Leoncelli spoil on Ben Dixon drew a 50m penalty and a kick from the goalsquare. Four more goals sealed the deal for the Hawks, and dropped Melbourne to 2-2 for the season. Hawk Aaron Lord's five goals matched the score of the opposition. The victory raised Hawthorn to the top of the ladder for the first time in eight seasons.

Best were Walsh, Woewodin and Nicholson.

Neale Daniher refused to use the decision against Leoncelli as an excuse for the loss and said "I thought we came out of the blocks real slow. To the credit of the boys they really fought back to get into the game. But they were able to take the game away from us in the second half."
