North Melbourne win by 29 points
1 - Garry Lyon
First game and First goal
First MFC game
Melbourne finished its worst start to the season since 1984, ending the first month of games under new coach Neil Balme without a win. They got off to a good start, with debutante Paul Hopgood goalling with his first kick after 45 seconds, then Andrew Obst adding another soon after. By quarter time they'd conceded six goals, four to Wayne Carey, who outmatched David Schwarz, and trailed by 21 points. The Demons challenged again early in the second term, before four late goals set up a 41 point lead for North.
Three goals to Garry Lyon in the third term kept the margin respectable, before the Demons narrowly won the last quarter when the game was long lost. Peter Rohde held Carey late, keeping him to just seven goals, and Schwarz went into the ruck when Jim Stynes departed with broken ribs during the third quarter after a goalsquare collision with David Neitz,
Neale Balme suggested that some of his players "may be over-rated", and said, "Either they play better or I'm going to have some problems".
