In the last game of 1930 Melbourne had travelled to the Glenferrie Oval needing only to beat the lowly Hawks to make the finals. They were surprisingly defeated, and Geelong took their place on percentages.
Glenferrie Oval would prove a difficult ground for the Redlegs/Demons to play at over the years, and they were almost tripped up by the Mayblooms again on this day - having to recover from a 22 point deficit at the last change before running over the top and improving their record to three wins from four.
The home side may have given themselves a better chance of victory had they not spurned so many scoring shots in the opening term. When Melbourne got their chance with the wind in the second quarter they were just as good as Hawthorn had been, but with the difference being that they kicked accurately.
A six goal third term put Hawthorn back on top, but forced to defend against the wind with their players rapidly tiring they couldn't hold on.
Gordon Ogden was suspended for four matches for attempted striking.
Best were Jackson, Tymms and Johnson.
