In the first AFL match on the Gold Coast since 1992, the Demons trailed by as much as 38 points in the second term.
They were still 25 down at the last change but when Cameron Bruce goalled at the 26 minute mark of the last quarter the margin was a straight kick.
An Aaron Davey shot at goal which would have levelled the scores deep into the last quarter was deemed to have been touched on the line by Crow Trent Hentschell.
