Having been beaten from pillar to post in the media after their insipid Round 1 performance against Hawthorn, the Demons set out to deliver an improved performance. They almost delivered one of the biggest upsets in modern history.
Collingwood had beaten pre-season premiers the Western Bulldogs handily in the first round, and that combined with Melbourne's 56 point loss sent them in as $1.05 favourites but by quarter time the Demons were 15 points in front. Ably led by Ricky Petterd in the forward line, and with Mark Jamar dominating former teammate Darren Jolly in the ruck it was a completely different side to the one which had capitulated a week earlier.
Collingwood struck back but by half-time the Demons had crept back to within a goal, and they started the last term the same score behind. Goals to Brad Green, Petterd and Lynden Dunn gave them an 11 point lead with just a few minutes to play. The Magpies then kicked two goals to take a one point lead into the last three minutes of the match. Resolute defending kept them from sealing the game and with 40 seconds left Jack Grimes launched an attack from the backline which was eventually propelled inside 50 by Matthew Bate.
The ball was rebounded but only as far as Rohan Bail, who had kicked his first goal to open the game. With seconds left he kicked the ball to the goalsquare when it bobbled out of Petterd's hands on the siren.
Petterd, Jamar and Green were Melbourne's best.
Jake Spencer was a late withdrawal, replaced by Clint Bartram.
