Sydney win by 14 points
2 - Alan Johnson
Ray Holden (2nd game)
In front of a paltry crowd in Sydney against the financially troubled Swans the Demons crashed to their second straight loss to open the season.
Melbourne were terrible in the first half and were 39 points down at the long break. They chipped away at the margin in the third, but their attack into the wind was poor, directing much of the play into a pocket that was hard to score from. They won the quarter but kicked 3.9 and only took 11 points from Sydney's lead. With the four goal breeze in their favour during the last they unleashed a withering comeback but fell short.
Best were Flower, Johnson and Healy.
