First game and First goal
For the second time during the season the Demons played out of their skins against the Bombers and had some chance of snatching a victory well into the last quarter. This time, in front of the more genteel surroundings of Waverley rather than Windy Hill, the match was played out with none of the anarchy of the first clash and no beer cans were hurled at any full-forwards.
Free of his nemesis from the first game Ronnie Andrews, Mark Jackson booted six and proved a master motivator for his teammates. By the last change the Demons had led all day and on the back of Jackson's wild antics there was a genuine belief amongst Melbourne fans that even though it would mean nothing in the grand scheme of 1982 that they could pull off an upset win.
With even their coach describing them as "shorter and lighter" than the Bombers the dream was soon extinguished. Class won out in the end but it had taken three quarters to show.
Best were Ellingworth, Battiston and O'Sullivan
