Former Eagle defender Geoff Miles had been a bit-part player for the Cats, playing nine games for the season without kicking a goal, but recalled to the side only due to a string of injuries he was dominant with seven as Geelong ran away to an easy victory.
In rain and freezing winds Melbourne dominated the first 15 minutes, but was desperately inaccurate in the first quarter when they kicked 2.10. They had a lead of three points at the break before Geelong kicked six goals to one in the second quarter and seven to one in the third.
Melbourne only managed one more goal as a team than Miles, and that was thanks mainly to four goals in the last quarter.
Best were J. Stynes, G. Lovett and Obst.
John Northey blamed his side's wasteful start, saying: "It seemed to just drain every player that we had out there and we had nothing until the last 15 minutes."
