The Demons were just a game and percentage outside the eight, but needed to keep winning to stay in touch with the pack. After an even first two quarters when the sides had traded blows, Melbourne took a narrow lead into half time.
Sydney, wearing red and white hooped socks for just the second time since leaving Victoria, recovered to snatch the lead at the last break, and with the Demons kept to three behinds for the final term the visitors scored 7.4 in coasting to a big victory.
Chisholm, Shanahan and White were the best for Melbourne.
