After a tight first 20 minutes where neither side managed a goal, Melbourne kicked three in four minutes to take an early lead. Port got their first of the game on the siren, drawing level early in the second quarter and going into half time just two points down.
The Demons sparked again early in the third, kicking four of the first five goals to open a 20 point lead. Port responded with three of the next four to cut the margin to eight, before running over the top in a last quarter where Melbourne only kicked 0.2.
Best were Viney, Gawn and Oliver. Oscar McDonald was fined $2000 for rough conduct.
