Kicking with a gale in the first quarter, and in wet conditions throughout the day, the Demons did their best to put the fiasco the week before against Sydney out of their minds and keep their finals hopes alive.
They started well, taking a six goal lead and were fortunate that the wind then turned in their favour for the second quarter. St Kilda outscored them in that quarter, but the torrential rain which hit the ground made it almost impossible for the Saints to catch up. With the wind again in the last quarter they kept St Kilda goalless and hung on for a win to leave them 10th on the ladder and a game outside the top six.
Best were Stynes, Viney and Kowal. Viney suffered a suspected broken nose.
