Melbourne win by 17 points

After being given a shock against Footscray a week earlier, having to kick two goals in the dying minutes to win, the fourth placed Redlegs faced off against the first team to beat them that year and once again had to come from behind to win.
Strong defensive work by the Saints restricted Melbourne to one goal in the first quarter, but they remained close by only conceding two. After kicking the first two goals of the second quarter the Reds might have had more but ran into a strong St Kilda defence, before two late goals left the visitors in front at the long break.
Inaccurate kicking for goal had cost Melbourne early but St Kilda weren't having such problems. With high marking and good defensive play the Saints opened up a lead of 12 points before two late goals temporarily put Melbourne in front. St Kilda got a last minute behind to take a one point lead into the quarte.r
The margin extended to seven before the home side finally found their kicking boots in the final term, booting 5.2 to run out comfortable winners and further enhance their chances of playing finals football.
Warne-Smith, Esposito and Conole were best. Crapper was 19th man. Stan Wittman had a seriously injured collarbone. Warne-Smith, Esposito and Usher all also suffered injuries.
