On a perfect surface, and with a light breeze blowing across the seaside ground the match was expected to be a close one and for the first quarter it lived up to expectations. St Kilda kicked the first goal of the game and had the lead at quarter time, then things went very wrong for the home side.

The second quarter was sheer domination, Melbourne kicked 9.4 to a point - and St Kilda's point was their only foray across the halfway line in the last few minutes of the term. Melbourne's domination had much to do with the powerful marking of Robert C Johnson who was not only setting up goals but kicking them himself.

The Seasiders gave a better account of themselves in the third quarter, but were wasteful with their kicking any only managed six straight behinds while the visitors consolidated their big lead before again kicking away in the last quarter to register a big victory.

With the match well over by the last quarter the only entertainment for the crowd was Umpire Rowe suffering a severe attack of cramp which forced the game to be halted until he recovered. The game petered out with a serious of spiteful encounters which saw field and boundary umpires warning a player from each team.

Johnson, Taylor and Corbett were best. With six games to play Melbourne remained third, a game and significant percentage clear of fifth placed Essendon.
