Melbourne win by 22 points
Melbourne started favourite against a Collingwood side that was higher on the ladder but had been destroyed by injuries during the week. Melbourne had their own issues, with Peter Keenan a late withdrawal, but it was nothing compared to what the Pies had suffered.
Jumping to a four goal to nil start at quarter time it looked as if the Demons were going to romp to victory, but the wounded Pies struck back to be within seven points at half time, and then took a lead into the last change.
Ditterich left the field at three-quarter time with a hamstring injury, and Ross Brewer suffered a torn hamstring which would keep him out for the next three weeks.
The loss of Ditterich and the brilliant Brewer, along with an injury to Ray Biffin who had dominated Peter McKenna for three quarters meant the Pies were the red hot favourites to keep hold of their 1pt lead three-quarter time lead.
The Demons, however, found inspiration in their injury plague and came home with a barnstorming finish. The win drew Melbourne to within a game of the Pies in fifth place.
Best were Brewer, Wells and Hardeman. Keenan (bruised thigh) was replaced in the selected side by Osborne, Ditterich (strained thigh) was replaced by Hurst at three quarter time, and Brewer (hamstring) was replaced by Barham in the last quarter.
Des Campbell was suspended for two matches for striking after a fight with Pie Rene Kink. They were found guilty of hitting each other with left and right fists to the face during the third quarter.
