In a quirk of the fixure, the sides met again just three weeks after their match in Tasmania. This time it was on an MCG that had only just dried out from earlier rain, but Fitzroy proved their earlier win was no fluke.

The Maroons had the first chance, with Tony Ongarello marking within range 10 seconds into the game. He missed, and the visitors continued to spurn chances early through poor disposal. The sides were level on two goals, before a late goal left Melbourne ahead. It took 26 minutes for the opening goal of the second quarter, but shortly after Albiston's major, Fitzroy responded, leaving scores level at the break.

The last goal of an even first quarter went to Melbourne to give them a four point lead, Fitzroy had the majority of the play but Melbourne's defence was strong in keeping them at bay. Neither side managed a goal for the first 20 minutes of the second quarter before each side added one, with Fitzroy's inaccuracy delivering 1.6 for the term.

Melbourne went as far as 11 points clear in the third quarter before Fitzroy cut the gap to five. In the season's best last quarter the lead changed five times, and were level twice before Fitzroy came out on top. A rush of attacks in the last few minutes finally breached a tired Demon defence, leaving Melbourne's top four hopes in tatters.

Best were Albiston, McKenzie and McMahen. Lack and Lane were unused 19th and 20th men, Ferguson replaced Woods (injured hip) in the selected side.

Melbourne 9.16 d. Fitzroy 6.3

Fitzroy 11.8 d. Melbourne 11.7
