Biggest win and highest score at Glenferrie Oval.

Melbourne had broken through for their third win of the season on the previous Saturday, and matched up against one of the sides below them on the ladder they racked up their fourth victory in record breaking style.

The Demons were clearly the best side from the first bounce, but were wasteful in the first quarter with 16 scoring shots only earning them six goals. Hawthorn managed to keep the margin down to 25 points kicking into the breeze, but they were unable to take advantage with their own turn using the wind. They got the first goal of the quarter but after that found it hard to break through Melbourne's defence and the Demons extended their lead by two points.

The visitors didn't make the same mistake and had 16 scoring shots in the third, and this time added nine goals to seal victory by the final change. Hawthorn only had the ball in their forward line once in the first 15 minutes, and Melbourne stormed away to an 86 point lead at the last change thanks partly to five goals from Fanning during the quarter.

Hawthorn only managed a single goal in the second half, and four more to the Demons in the last sealed what would be their highest ever score and biggest win at Glenferrie Oval. The victory lifted the Demons to ninth, and left Hawthorn 11th above only winless Geelong.

Melbourne's main destroyer was Fred Fanning, who kicked 11.11 but was suspended for four matches after being reported for striking a Hawthorn player with a punch to the stomach. Heywood replaced Porter (injured shoulder) in the last quarter.

Melbourne 17.17 d. Hawthorn 15.11
