Melbourne's third win in a row further pressed their claims for a surprise run at the finals. They led all day at Windy Hill and won relatively easily, but they were lucky that Essendon kicked so badly in the last quarter.

Three first quarter goals to Fanning helped Melbourne to a 13 point lead at quarter time. Essendon held him until then, but Melbourne kept attacking. The Demons' reliance on kicking to Fanning, even after he was shut down, cost them opportunities and each side was only able to kick one goal for the term.

Fanning got his fourth just after half time, but Essendon were able to reduce the margin to nine at the last break. Melbourne then kicked away to a 20 point last quarter lead before Essendon began their comeback. Two misses from easy kicks were disastrous for the Dons, and Melbourne held on to win.

The Demons entered a two week break for the bye and Lightning Premiership, having qualified to play in the second part of the season with their hopes of a top four finish still alive.

Dowsing replaced Emselle (injured leg) in the second quarter.

Essendon 16.8 d. Melbourne 13.12
