Melbourne fielded 10 new players, six who were making their VFL debut, and a new coach. The upheaval didn't affect them as they played good quality football when dealing with a tricky breeze which blew strongly to one end of the ground and caused the ball to spend much time out of bounds on the wing.

South failed to use the wind to their advantage in the first quarter, only having a one point lead at the change, and conceded three to one in the second. They failed to make any headway in the third and their first rover suffered an injury.

The last quarter was even, though South had the best of the game late in the day as several Melbourne players went down with cramp. They had built up enough of a barrier to get them over the line. It was their first win since beating South in Round 4 the previous year.

Best were Nolan, Coutie and Mills.
