Residentially tied to Richmond, Rhoden finished second in the VAFA best and fairest in 1965 and trained with the Tigers in the 1966 pre-season but did not play for them. Returning to University Blues he joined Melbourne two years later and played three games over a season and a half, winning the league's Reserve Grade best and fairest in his first season.
Rhoden remained on the list in 1970, and despite not playing a senior game captained that year's reserves premiership side.
He was not officially delisted by the Demons until the end of 1971 after which he joined Sandringham for three games the next year.
Rhoden was elected to Melbourne's committee for 1974 and remained in the role through 1979.
