A two half exhibition charity match was played between the two sides with an experimental rule in place that allowed two boundary umpires, who were given the power to bounce the ball when touched from the throw-in.

Essendon were poor, and Melbourne beat them easily.

Best was McGinis.

Some sources have McCarthy kicking two and Fry not kicking any.
