June 22 - Melbourne Ground
Carlton scored the first goal after half an hour, and a further 30 minutes later they added their second to seal the match. One of the goals was scored by Bill Gorman, who had appeared for Melbourne the previous year.
It was Carlton's first ever win over Melbourne, achieved against a side that had several players fail to turn up. Inferior substitutes were found to replace them. They also lost Fleming and Ireland to other engagements shortly after the start of the game, playing two short for the rest of the match.
Best for Melbourne were Ferguson, Finlay and Horan were best.
Bennie, L. Bell, Bruford, T. Ireland, Finlay, Ferguson (c), Moody, R. Waugh, Wardill, Moody, Hepburn, Mack, Oswald, Lock, McLaughlin, Harrison, Horan, G. Waugh. Emergency - Green, Kennedy, Bald, Stevens, Hetherington, Gair, Copeland
Freeman was a late addition for Ferguson and captained the side.
Some sources say the game was played on Richmond Paddock
