Out of the side for most of 2021, Smith got an opportunity in defence at the end of the season. He played Melbourne's first final, before suffering a calf injury in a training session that cost him his place in the Demons' Preliminary Final team. He played five games in 2022 before an ankle injury put him out of the side. He returned later in the year for Casey Demons, and was named as substitute for both Melbourne's losing finals but didn't get on the ground again at senior level. He returned to play in the Casey Demons' 2022 VFL premiership side.
Smith signed a two year contract extension in late 2022, but didn't play the next year until Round 12. After returning was used both forward and back, before settling in the side's attack after a season-ending injury to Harrison Petty. He kicked a career high three goals in Melbourne's losing Semi Final.
